Collegiate SWE Chapter Seminar Guide-for Students:
Purpose: This document will serve as a guide and outline for University SWE Club Seminar collaboration with Medtronic professionals. If you have any questions, please contact Makenna Shaske ([email protected]).
Seminar Tips:
- We please ask that students connect to the zoom meeting individually in order for us to us breakout rooms. This also helps us see your face and connect with you individually a lot better!
- We encourage you to connect with us on LinkedIn post seminar!
- We want this to be as interactive as possible! Encourage SWE members to ask questions, and that no question is a dumb question! This is a safe space!
Format: Resume Workshop
Preparation:
- come prepared with your most recent resume copy if you have it
- ensure each student has the zoom link in order to connect individually
Timing/Topics:
Introductions (5 minutes)
- Facilitator share his/her/their resume, describe sections and some pointers for each,
- panel can feel free to ad lib as necessary (10 minutes)
- Break up into 1 st round of breakout rooms (15 minutes)
- Each panelist has a breakout room
- Break up into 2 nd round of breakout rooms (15 minutes)
- Closing thoughts-each panelist say their biggest piece of advice for resumes from collegiate SWE members
Question Ideas:
- Is it better to position yourself as a generalist or specialist on your resume?
- What should I leave out of my resume?
- What if I don’t have enough to put on my resume?
- What’s the worst resume mistake?
- How long should a resume be?
- Do I need a cover letter?
Format: Career Panel or Challenges as a Woman in SWE
Preparation:
- ensure each student has the zoom link in order to connect individually
- come prepared to talk about your career experience questions, no question is a dumb question!
- This type of seminar format may vary depending on participation-feel free to personallygage how the seminar should go, breakout rooms can be optional. If you are having a great discussion all together, stick with that! If there is interested getting to know panelists individually, breakout rooms may be the best option.
Timing/Topics:
Introductions-each panelist explain their background briefly, and their current position,
if there are fewer students, each student introduce themselves and their major (10-15
minutes)
student leader and the facilitator to decide whether they’d like to do
breakout rooms or not (15-20 minutes)
Breakout Room Approx. Timing:
Break up into 1 st round of breakout rooms (15 minutes)
Break up into 2 nd round of breakout rooms if time (15 minutes)
No Breakout Rooms:
(another 30 minutes)
Closing thoughts-each panelist say their closing piece of advice from collegiate
SWE members (10 minutes)
Question Ideas to Use:
- Am I stuck in the major or engineering discipline that I choose in college?
- How did you know what role you wanted, or the direction your career went?
- Why is networking important?
- What’s been the most difficult challenge as a women in STEM?
- What do you enjoy the most about your role?
- What was your most helpful college experience to prepare you for your current job?
